Donation Drive for Covenant House: Covenant House Vancouver provides food, shelter, clothing and counseling to an estimated 1,400 street youth living in Vancouver at any given time – young people for whom there is often no one else. Join us in collecting items to donate to Covenant House, to help bring warmth and joy to homeless youth this Thanksgiving. We will be collecting gently used clothing, toiletries, housewares and other items to be delivered to Covenant House by the Anchor Point Upper Elementary and Adolescent students. Due to space limitations, only certain items can be accepted as donations. Please see the attachment for a complete list of items accepted. If you would like to contribute, kindly drop off donations at your child’s facility by Monday, October 24th. Supporting Our School Through Purchases on Amazon: On the bookstore page of our website is a direct link to Amazon. Any purchases that are made on there will generate revenue towards our students’ enrichment funds. This is true for any purchase (not just books!) so long as you enter Amazon from the school’s website .  Please let your friends and family know that they can help support our school by making their Amazon purchases through the link on our site. They can access the bookstore page without needing to log into the website with a password.

CASA COMMUNITY (PRE-SCHOOL & EXTENDED-DAY)

Labeling: Please label your child’s clothing, shoes, food containers, water bottles, and bags. Because many children have identical items, it is very helpful for the children (and staff) to be able to identify the objects quickly. This is especially important as the children become capable of identifying their own items. Thank you!

Help Needed: There is a family in the PM Preschool class who is looking for help in picking up a child from the North Creek campus at 3:45pm. Please email to northcreek@lionsgatemontess ori.org if you can help. The school will help you to connect with the family. Thank you!

Parent/Child Workshop │Thursday, October 20th: This is an after-school event for the students to show their parents of the work they have been doing at school. Because it is otherwise a regular school day, please pick up your child on time from school and then return at your scheduled time slot. An invitation will be sent home with your child at dismissal before the weekend. There is a notice with information by the North Creek school door available for your review. If you cannot attend the Parent/Child Workshop and would like to have a make-up time, please email to northcreek@lionsgatemontess ori.org and arrange one with your child’s Directress.

Parent Observation Week October 24th – 28th, Monday to Friday: A sign-up sheet has been posted by the North Creek door for parent observations. Parents are invited into the school environment to view their child and the classroom at work. You will receive information at the door as well as paper to write down your notes. Please read the guidelines carefully. Each parent’s observation session is 20 minutes. We look forward to your classroom visit!

Halloween Celebration October 31:  North Creek will celebrate Halloween but will not be supporting the commercial and consumerist values of the festival that are promoted in the marketing world. The Casa students will not be dressing up in the classroom environment. It is a regular school day with activities and lessons on animals, classified cards and cultural dressings, including stories and discussions in geography and history. We respectfully ask families to kindly refrain from bringing candy treats, as we would like to focus on the subjects of people, land, and their stories that bring us together. We deeply appreciate your attention to this request. Please do not hesitate to email us if you have any questions about this.

ELEMENTARY & ADOLESCENT COMMUNITY

Upper Elementary – WE Day, Thursday, November 3rd: Our Upper Elementary students were invited to attend this year’s WE Day on Thursday, November 3rd at Rogers Arena. WE Day is an educational program that empowers young people to become active local and global citizens. An unparalleled stadium-sized experience, WE Day brings together world-renowned speakers and performers with stands packed with young social innovators to honour their contributions and kick-start another year of change. Tickets for WE Day are not sold. Thanks to their generous sponsors, the event is free to attend for schools enrolled in the WE Schools Program. The show starts at 9:30am. On that day, kindly drop off your child promptly at 8:30am at Anchor Point along with a picnic lunch! You can also support the Greater Vancouver Food Bank this year at WE Day Vancouver by bringing nonperishable food items to WE Day! For more information, visit: www.weday.com. Farm Update: Next farm visit will be Monday, October 17th. Students will leave Anchor Point at around 10:30am and are expected to arrive back at Anchor Point at approximately 4:30pm. You’re welcome to pick up your child directly from the Lulu Island facility if you wish. If this is the case, please let us know in advance. PLEASE ENSURE YOUR CHILD HAS A COMPASS CARD WITH A SUFFICIENT BALANCE FOR TRANSIT.

Harry Potter Marathon @ IMAX Theaters: For the first time EVER, all EIGHT Harry Potter movies will be shown in IMAX Theatres. For one week, starting October 13th, us mere Muggles can disappear into the world of Hogwarts and Quidditch. All of the Potter hoopla is to get ready for JK Rowling’s next creation…Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them (which opens November 18th). The IMAX Harry Potter movies are being shown at only two theatres in BC. Langley’s Cineplex Cinemas and Richmond’s SilverCity Riverport Cinemas.

Alien Worlds Weekend at HR MacMillan Space Centre October 15 & 16, 2016: Talk about the perfect way to get ready for Halloween. During Alien Worlds Weekend at the HR MacMillan Space Centre, amazing make-up artists from Blanche MacDonald will transform you into a space creature. Match your spaced out make-up to one of the three planets in our galaxy. Are you an alien who calls an ice-planet home? Maybe you would prefer to set up your home on a desert or water planet. And moms & dads, this face painting experience isn’t just for the little ones! The whole family can be transformed into space monsters. Admission to the HR MacMillan Space Centre not only gets you access to the alien face-painting, but there will also be crafts & activities all with an alien-theme. There is no extra cost to experience Alien Worlds Weekend at the Space Centre.

Ghost Train at Stanley Park Until October 31, 2016: Prepare to be thrilled and chilled by La Llorona, La Catrina and other mischievous souls in celebration of the Day of the Dead! Gather with friends and family to honour the returning spirits of loved ones and explore this delightful festival of life. Be serenaded by a mariachi band, ride the train through the tunnel of flames with the Aztec Lord and Lady of Death, and witness the gorgeous graveyard where friendly souls return to dance. Tickets are now on sale through TicketLeader. From 3:00pm onwards each day, you can purchase tickets at the ticket booth in the Stanley Park Train Plaza. You can buy same-day tickets only. At least half of the tickets for each night are reserved for on-site purchase, so even if Ticketmaster is sold out for that day, there will still be tickets for sale on-site. However, since this event is so popular, tickets for the day can sell out quickly. Your ticket is valid for one Ghost Train ride and other attractions in the plaza. Train tickets are sold in half-hour time slots. Several trains will depart within each time slot. Avoid the crowds and come out Monday to Thursday in the first two weeks. There are also matinee train rides which are more kid-friendly as it is daytime, and no one is popping out to scare the riders. Also, the popular Spooky Barn returns for its 3rd year. The Barn is open at the same time as the Ghost Train and is all indoors. Admission rates: adults (18 – 64 yrs) $11; children (3-17 yrs) $8; children under 2 yrs FREE; seniors (65+ yrs) $8; matinee (train only – all ages) $6; Spooky Bard $2.

Halloween at FlyOver Canada: October 13 to 31, 2016: FlyOver Canada is celebrating the fun of Halloween by adding some spine-tingling entertainment to its popular, must-see attraction. Broomelda the Witch invites guests to venture through the Haunted Hallway and onto a thrilling ride across Canada. If everyone survives, visitors will earn their official “Witch Academy Diploma” at the end. The Halloween-themed activities are aimed towards kids aged 4-12 years.

VanDusen Garden’s Glow in the Garden October 24 to 31, 2016: Experience an unforgettable Halloween walk in the woods at VanDusen Botanical Garden The Garden comes to life with spellbinding lights, ghoulish music, and glowing pumpkin characters created by award-winning carvers, Clive Cooper and Bruce Waugh. Stanley Park Ecology Society: The Stanley Park Ecology Society hosts ongoing events exploring the beauty of Stanley Park. Admission is either by donation or a nominal amount. The programs promoted on Family Fun Vancouver are open to participants of all ages. As with any event, we do our best to provide our readers with the most current information but it is a good idea to give the Stanley Park Ecology Society a call prior to heading out. Carousel Theatre for Young People Sultans of the Street: October 29 & 30, November 5, 6, 11, 12 & 13, 2016: Carousel Theatre for Young People productions introduce children to the wonderful world of theatre. The hour-long performances, full of bright colours, lots of action, sometimes singing, and engaging stories, mesmerize children for the entire performance. The first production in the 2016/17 season is the Sultans of the Street. The play tells the tale of 4 children: 2 of whom want new kites and 2 of whom merely want the privilege of attending school. The children desiring an education are trapped in a world of begging on the streets of Kolkata, India. Wearing the clothing of gods, the 2 children bless the generous and threaten to curse those who do not give them something. The four children work together to escape servitude and set a course for a new life. The Sultans of the Street is presented in association with Diwali Fest. While most Carousel Theatre for Young People productions are intended for children aged 3 & up, the Sultans of the Street is best suited for children aged 6 & up.

The other shows in the Carousel Theatre for Young People’s 2016/17 season are: Goodnight Moon and the Runaway Bunny (November 19 – 26), A Charlie Brown Christmas (November 25 – December 24), Dr Seuss’ The Cat in the Hat (February 24 – March 19), and Good Day and Good Night (June 6 – 18).
