Updates for the Week of June 8th

Parent Conferences – Kind thanks to all who took the time out to meet with our teachers on Friday. If you were not able to make it and would like to re-schedule, please contact your child’s teacher to set up an alternative time to meet.

Father’s Day Picnic, Friday, June 12th: School will not be in session on this day. Families should go directly to the picnic site at 10:30am. Kindly see our Weekly Memo email attachment for information on this year’s schedule of events and team organization, as well as some helpful reminders! As well, please let us know if you and your family will not be attending. ​Sign-up sheets for our potluck picnic will be posted this week!

Lulu Island​ Montessori​ Daycare Now Open: We are now accepting applications at our new preschool/daycare campus in Richmond! Lulu Island’s primary program is offered to children from ages 3-6. Students have the option of attending the program either for the full day (8:00am to 5:30pm) or half day (8:45am to 12:45pm). Breakfast and lunch are included, and natural outdoor play space is readily accessible. If you or anyone you know is interested in knowing more, please contact us at info@lionsgatemontessori.org.

Talent Show – Wednesday​, June 17th, 2015: We are pleased to announce our annual Talent Show, to be held on the evening of Wednesday, June 17th, at the Roundhouse Community Centre. Physical tickets will be distributed this coming week! ​​​Thank you in advance for your patience and cooperation!

ChildRun Update: This year, we dedicated our efforts to Sliva, our student from North Creek who was recently diagnosed with leukemia. Thank you for your fundraising efforts! With your help, we surpassed our fundraising goal of $5000. We have now raised overs $10,500 and were one of the top school teams!

Adolescents Field Trip to Beaty Biodiversity Museum – Wednesday, June 10th: Students will be taking transit to visit the Beaty Biodiversity Museum on Wednesday, June 10th. The students will explore biodiversity and the interconnectedness of life by comparing structures and behaviours of local animals and plants in different habitats and communities. They will participate in hands on activities and use museum specimens to learn about adaptations and taxonomy. We may be eating lunch in the park {if weather permits}, so please ensure your child have a picnic bagged lunch that doesn’t require heating up. On that day, the Adolescents should be dropped off and picked up at our Anchor Point campus. Please find more information and the permission slip attached with the Weekly Memo. Please submit the form and payment (transportation) no later than Friday, May 29th.​ Thank you to the PSG for helping fund this field trip!

ANCHOR POINT

Mike’s Critters ​Visit to Anchor Point (Lower Elementary) – Monday, June 8th: Serving the Lower Mainland of British Columbia since 1992, Mike’s Critters is a collection of over 300 animals from about 70 species. Reptiles, amphibians, birds, insects, arachnids, crustaceans and mammals populate this fascinating collection of weird and wonderful creatures from around the world. Mike will come to Anchor Point ​and will show the children some of his creatures! Payment is not necessary. This visit is being funded by the School’s Enrichment Fund and the Parent Support Group!

Lower Elementary Field Trip to Stanley Park – Tuesday, June 9th: Students will discover the hidden secrets and stories of the forest in this sensory journey through nature. They will have their sense awaken as they explore the temperate rain forest, find tiny life forms with magnifiers, meet bugs, feed trees, and transform into a bat while learning how all of these forest elements are connected. We will be eating lunch in the park. Please ensure your child have a picnic bagged lunch that doesn’t require heating up. The half-day students (both am and pm) will participate in the same field trip with the North Creek peers on Thursday, June 11th.

Tennis Lessons: We are pleased to offer Anchor Point students the opportunity to participate in Tennis Lessons, commencing April 10th. There are held at David Lam Park, East Tennis Courts. The lessons are scheduled on the following dates: April 17th, April 24th, May 1st, May 22nd, and May 29th, from 12pm to 2pm. Please note that some racquets are available, but it is recommended that children bring their own. If your child is attending the half-day program at AP (both am and pm) and wishes to participate, we will be able to accommodate them.  Please ensure that your child is dressed appropriately for the event and ​brings​ a water bottle. We are also planning to have a picnic with the children at the park, so please pack a lunch that doesn’t require heating up. The morning half day children will stay with the Anchor Point students for the whole day and should be​ picked up at that location at dismissal. The afternoon half day children will be picked up from North Creek after lunch and walked​ to the park to join the lessons. Dismissal will be as usual at Anchor Point.  In the event of rain, tennis will be cancelled. ​

NORTH CREEK

Extended-Day Going Outs – June 11th and June 16th: Our students will have the opportunity to attend short field trips in June. Going out and exploring the community outside the Montessori classroom is developmentally appropriate for this age group. Montessori believed that the students who are entering the next stage of development are suited to learn from activities outside the school learning about society, culture and the natural world. Please find below the schedules activities:

1) Stanley Park: Natural Detectives*: Thursday, June11th – Students will discover the hidden secrets and stories of the forest in this sensory journey through nature. They will have their sense awaken as they explore the temperate rain forest, find tiny life forms with magnifiers, meet bugs, feed trees, and transform into a bat while learning how all of these forest elements are connected. Thank you to the PSG for funding this field trip! 

* Please note that students that attend North Creek for half-day (both am and pm) are eligible for this field trip. Students that attend the pm session at AP will be with their North Creek peers that day.

2) Lulu Island Montessori (our brand new campus in Richmond): Tuesday, June 16th | 9:00am –
Students will visit our brand new campus in Richmond, see the beehives, walk in nature and enjoy the day outside the classroom. We will be eating lunch in Richmond. Please ensure​ that​
your child ha​s​ a picnic bagged lunch that doesn’t require heating up. Thank you to the PSG for funding th​e Stanley Park​field trip!​​

​Bicycles and scooters: With the increasing number of request​s ​to park bicycles and scooters inside the classroom, it has become hazardous in the environment. We will not be able to accept them into the classroom anymore. Thank you for your understanding.​

​​Signing up the flower donations for the flower arrangement: We’d like to ask you to sign up the flower donations on the sheet displayed at the door. Flower Arranging is an important exercise in our Practical Life area and very popular with the children. With your cooperation, we can help our children develop aesthetic sense and care for their environment. Thank you.

Hot weather: As the weather gets warmer, please remember to send your child with applied sunscreen, a hat and sunglasses.​

Nut-Free environment in the classroom: We’d like to kindly remind you ​that North Creek is a nut-free environment. Please refrain from packing snacks or lunch for your child​ that contains them.​ ​Thank you!​

​Work Folders:  We’d love to ensure work is taken home for your viewing pleasure in your child’s personal waterproof sleeve.​ So kindly ensure you return these to school for re-fill!

​​Punctuality Reminder:  ​Please ​en​sure punctual arrival during drop-off ​as late arrival​s​ ​are very disruptive to the work​ of the whole class ​which becomes a huge obstacle for ​our ​children’s development. Thank you for your cooperation.

Safety Reminder: For safety reasons, please be cautious during drop-off and pick-up and encourage your child to walk and not run on the sidewalk.

General Parking Reminder:  Please be alerted that parking in front of the school is metered. Ticketing officers are quick in giving out tickets during drop-off and pick-up times!​

Labeling Reminder:  This is a friendly reminder to please label all of your child’s clothing, including scarves, hats, jackets, and shoes. Thank you!

“The Alzheimer’s Family Manual” by Mr. Lyle Weinstein: We are pleased to announce that our very own Mr. Lyle has published “The Alzheimer’s Family Manual”, a collection of writings based on his work with Alzheimer’s families. Mr. Lyle’s father had early onset Alzheimer’s Disease and lived for 15 years after the illness began. The book was written for caregivers and family members. It expands on his original audiotape program of the same name that was released in 1992. Mr. Lyle served on the Board of Directors of the Santa Barbara Alzheimer’s Association for several years, leading support groups and counseling families dealing with the illness. The Alzheimer’s Family Manual is available on Amazon in hard copy and kindle editions. ​

Burnaby Village Carousel Rides – Opening Day of the Summer season, Saturday May 2nd: Burnaby Village is working on several exciting ideas and activities for their summer season! From May 2nd to September 7th, their gates are open 11am to 4:30pm, Tuesday – Sunday (plus Holiday Mondays). Admission is free and carousel rides are $2.55. Update for Week Ending May 22

Hana’s Initiative, Daffodils Headbands Fundraiser: Anchor Point student Hana S. has been touched by cancer in her life this past year. Since then, she has been interested in learning more about this disease and finding ways to help. Hana and her family have reached out to the Canadian Cancer Society and have obtained a bunch of their yellow daffodil pins. With them, they have made beautiful headbands which they will be selling as a fundraiser for the CCS. A table will be set up outside Anchor Point and North Creek and headbands will be available to purchase ($5) on the following days
times:
Anchor Point: Monday, May 25th at 4:30pm and 5:30pm
North Creek: Friday, May 29th at 11:45am and 3:45pm
Bake Sale containers and trays: We have a few dishes left over from the bake sale. Please let us know if you are missing any and we are happy to return it to you!

Father’s Day Picnic: We have begun organizing teams for the Father’s Day Picnic games taking place on Friday, June 12th at Ceperley Park. Kindly let us know if your child will not be attending the event. Thank you!

We would be happy to allocate more seats once every family has submitted their request. The due date for ticket purchase is Monday, May 25th.   Look out for an email notice confirming the tickets you have already purchased. Physical tickets will be distributed one week prior to the event. ​​​Thank you in advance for your patience and cooperation!

Hip Hop Lessons – Adolescents: Students will have their last lesson on Monday, May 25. They walk together to the Scotiabank Theatre (677 Davie Street, at Granville). Please drop off your child/ren no later than 8:45am to ensure a full hour of class with Mr. Yoshi. If you cannot make it to the school by 8:45am​, kindly drop off your child/ren at the Scotiabank Theatre directly. Please be sure to send a water bottle with your child/ren and ensure they dress appropriately as it is quite warm inside the dance center.

Upper Elementary Field Trip to HR MacMillan Space Centre – Wednesday, May 27th: The UE students will have the opportunity to visit the HR MacMillan Space Centre and attend the following programs: a Planetarium Show, the Groundstation Canada Show, a workshop and visit the Cosmic Courtyard Gallery. Students will eat lunch at the park. Please ensure your child/ren have a picnic bagged lunch that doesn’t require heating up. Weather conditions can chance quickly and are often unpredictable regardless of time to the year. As a rule, prepare for all weather conditions.

Anchor Point Parent/Child Workshop – Thursday, May 28th: Your child just might be able to teach you a thing or two… Come join us for a personal lesson from your child at this after school event. The evening runs under a preassigned schedule, with different groups of families attending at a time. Please sign up for a slot that best suits you on the sign-up sheet posted by the door. ​

​East Side Story – May 24th at 2pm and 6pm (with performance of our very own Anchor Point student Tallulah Pantages): East Side Story is a fun, high-energy musical that features a cast of fairy tale characters who sneak into Strathcona at night to play ball with two Eastside kids. But when the basketball court gets purchased by Mr. Pennybags, to put up hotels, the gang has to band together to raise enough money to buy it back. The musical combines audience interaction, music, comedy and dance, and is suitable for audiences
from the very young to the young at heart!
